Low-pressure area near Sri Lanka expected to enhance rainfall

A low-level atmospheric disturbance near Sri Lanka has developed into a low-pressure area. Under the influence of this system, rainfall is expected to increase over the island and the deep and shallow sea areas around it during today.

The general public, as well as the naval and fishing communities, are requested to be attentive to future forecasts and bulletins issued by the Department of Meteorology.

Showers or thundershowers will occur at times in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, Northern, North-western and Southern provinces and in Anuradhapura district, and cloudy skies can be expected over these areas. Showers or thundershowers will occur after 1.00 p.m. elsewhere on the island.

Heavy falls above 100 mm are likely at some places in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Southern and North-western provinces.

The general public is requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damage caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.

Misty conditions can be expected at some places in the Central and Uva provinces during the early hours of the morning.
